According to data released by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have lost their lives during detention starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has reported that the real number is likely substantially larger, because of many of missing detainees in Gaza.

Study Results

Civilian Casualties

Restricted Israeli data shows that the vast majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who perished in detention were civilians, according to a parallel inquiry.

During May of this year, a military intelligence database tracking all combatants in Gaza, a list of more than 47,000 named individuals, listed merely 21 fatalities in custody. By that date, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had died in jail.

Detention Conditions

High-Profile Cases

Some deaths in detention have been high profile, including a 50-year-old medical chief who perished in detention after four months in confinement.

An inmate detained alongside the deceased reported that he was led to the courtyard by prison staff just prior to his death, obviously hurt and unclothed from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in Israeli custody are unidentified. The prison service and defense forces gave analysts with the total of casualties in confinement, and minimal additional information such as the facility where they lost their lives, but not the inmates’ personal details.

Recognition Difficulties

For 21 instances, primarily individuals from Gaza, analysts were unable to match the limited information supplied by authorities to a death registered by rights organisations, via testimony from former inmates or accounts in the press.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their family members’ fatalities also, as Israel has impeded efforts to track Palestinians it is holding.
