European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
