Social Media Influencers Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Material Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

Within moments of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these communities, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
