The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
